Something that I have strived to convey to children, all the years I have been teaching, is that being read to or reading by oneself opens up a whole world that you can go to whenever you want and wherever you are.
Some of my favourites.
Gosh anything by him, his books are delightful and children adore them, the illustrations are wonderful. All the park animals befriend and help Percy on all the jobs he has to do keeping the park pristine. Each and every book offers many topics to chat about with young children through the charming stories.
Percy the Park Keeper series. See for yourself here.
David McKee’s Elmer the Patchwork Elephant Series
Elmer learns that is Ok to be different and has all sorts of adventures.
Great for very young children to participate and turn the flap to see who arrives from the Zoo! Sweet story.
One of their many many beautifully illustrated books,
In Awkward Aardvark your child/children will love joining in on Aardvark’s snores!!
Really inspiring series for young readers, every night I would read a page and my son would read a page, then he was off reading on his own, he couldn’t get enough. This series developed in him a thirst for knowledge, a love of history and that a good book is a treasure!
Barbara Park’s Junie B Jones
Gosh, doesn’t everyone love the inappropriate, and Junie B Jones is a child who is frank and honest in her observations whether they are inappropriate or not. She creates giggles and gasps in her readers and lots of discussion on “would we/you say that?” “would I/you do that?”
I love her!
This was the first book written by Michael Morpurgo that my son and I read together, we became hooked on this author, his writing is truly amazing and we couldn’t get enough.
